Two of our best-loved loaves have won a Great Taste Award 2022.
We are delighted when our tiny microbakery is recognised for its great methods and flavours. Our Wholewheat with Oatmeal, and Fruit and Fennel sourdoughs are the winning loaves.
And I entered loaves that are my own recipes, developed over years and baked hundreds of times by hand in the kitchen. Let us know if you'd like to try one, or come on a course and learn for yourself.

March 5th is our next Start It Up bread workshop.

I am working on a new fruit loaf recipe, to sit alongside the light fruit and fennel I make at the moment. Something moister and a little heavier. but soft and maybe a little squidgy! First thoughts are for some rye flour mixed into wheat, and large plump raisins  - any nuts? Probably not - maybe some apricot......

Should be ready for lunch on the 6th.

Come and try it!

In April 2020, a week after Lockdown began, we decided to set up an ‘order and collect’ front garden bread shop for neighbours, friends, and NHS staff, in the days when people were literally keeping to their homes and not going to the shops if possible. The group was run on WhatsApp, and a weekly percentage of takings donated to the local Food Bank, with many people donating extra.

The bakery proved a great boon for us all, giving us a weekly diary date in a period of endless repetitive days, a chance for a random chat, and some fresh local food. I've made pushing 3000 loaves for the group in the 18 months so far.

In April 2020 I did a workshop for a new WhatsApp group (Little Eye Live Bake) on Zoom, where I gave out sourdough starter and flour to people taking part, and we made an overnight sourdough. In June I did a second run, but this time with people making their own starter and then using it to make and bake sourdoughs. This was a great success, with ongoing questions, answers, tips and photos on the Live Bake group. Some of the people in the photo below (about half the group) have made their own bread ever since.

We are currently making about loaves for about 40 local people to collect.

We are still running our 'click and collect' bakery for local people weekly. Malcolm is an organiser of the West Kirby Farmers Market, and we have got that up and running again, outdoors, with November and December markets confirmed (www.westkirbyfarmersmarket.co.uk ).

In November we ran our "lockdown sourdough bread class", with a new set up to meet covid requirements. It went off well, and while not quite as co-operative as before, there was still plenty of spontaneous interaction and conversation. New courses are running on Feb 20th and April 10th.

Our loaves from last weeks click & collect:

A 100% rye with chopped grain; a wholewheat with oatmeal; a seeded light wheat mix; a white baguette
